In this chapter, the young woman tells the story of her family's struggle against the Mings. She tells of how her brother, Cai Mingfu, tried to interrogate her brother's friend, Guan Yubai, but he was unable to gain any information from him. He died in a coma. The young woman wonders how she could have died like this. She says that she would not have fought with Cai if she had not been able to come back to her family. She adds that she gave him a bottle of medicine that day to help him in times of crisis. He gave her one day to "think it through" and she says she committed suicide that same night. He forced her to confess, but she refused. He says that he heard every word he had said, and he will be waiting for her to serve his tea. He thanks God they were successful in their mission, and says that with this "concrete proof" his family will be cleared of any accusations. He wonders if the King and Queen have gone to the temple to pray. He hears that they are there to pray for Cai's health.
