About This Chapter
. . the third shogun of the Tokugawa clan, who is also known as the "high priest" . The high priest is a retired shogun who has served in the Tokigawa clan for over a hundred years. He tells the high priest that he has kept a secret for the past one hundred and eighty-eight years: "Matsudaira Izu nokami" , the name that is used by all the shoguns and elders of the clan except the third and elder shogun. The priest says that if anyone wanted to strike at him, they would have to strike only at him. He says that he cannot let his friend die, and that he must serve the clan for at least a month. He asks the priest to grant him a truce, but the priest says it would mean that the battle is lost. He wants to fight, but he knows that if he does not fight, tenka's cries for help will echo in his ears. He refuses to fight if he is made to suffer, and says that it will take more than the end of the battle to stop him now. He calls the priest back to his castle and asks him who is more important to him, the priest or the priest's friend, the tokigawa priest. He chooses the priest.
