Otori and the carriage runner discuss their plan to spy on Tenjuin. They decide to circle the castle for a while and then head back to the shinagawa temple. Otori worries that her father will refuse to let the women go to the temple, but he wonders if he will refuse them if they explain that they have been forsaken by his father. The carriage runner tries to overtake the first runner, but the second runner overtakes him. The dogs attack the carriage, but Otori manages to escape.
