The next morning, Tetahashi is awakened by his servant, who tells him that the shogunate has sanctioned a brothel district called "yoshiwara" and that he will be giving away six new dolls to each of the prostitutes there in two months' time. The dolls will be given away to the women of the noble court, who have served in the upper echelons of the Japanese aristocracy. The men are horrified by the sight of the dolls, which they believe to be the work of a "spy" , and they decide to take the dolls to the brothel themselves.
