This chapter opens with a description of the attack on the shogunate by the seven aizu-spears. The swordsman washinosu-rensuke breaks through the main gate and kills a number of people, including a priest. The priest, akinari, watches the execution over three days and praises the women's actions. The women, however, do not want help from men, so they send for the priest, who is still a man.
