The chapter opens with a conversation between Hu and taotao, in which Hu tells his friend that he has just arrived at a restaurant in the middle of the night. . Hu tells tao that since he has escaped from his master's control, he is no match for chu-qing. He also tells him that wang-yunshao has been busy with political affairs, and that while he was not there, he had found a secret jade pendant that was concealing a secret from chung-ying. Hu says that he is a friend of chuqing's and that she has been searching for him. He adds that chung'er has been saying strange things about him, and it looks like he is her friend.
