In this chapter, we learn that the plot of the novel is still unfolding, and that it is not yet clear whether or not the vampire plans to return to the human race. In fact, there are three vampires who believe in the possibility of the existence of a "remotely close end" to life. One of them sought the death of a human because he was in love with her, and the other wanted the death out of his desire to die for a human. The only other vampire who believes in this possibility is Elmire, who wanted to die because she loved humans. Elmire's death was a result of a betrayal from a human, and Elmire is one of only three vampires in the world who believes that there is an "even remotely close end." Elmire suggests that they divide up the vampire and kin management tasks, so that Elmire can be the "head of management" and Michael can be "the head of vampire management." He suggests that the vampire management tasks should be handled by daniel or vehemence, while the kin management duties should be carried out by edric. He believes that edric will turn down the position, but that he will be able to handle the vampire tasks while they are being filled.
