About This Chapter
"Don't Look at Me Like That" is the first line of the second chapter, and it's the first time we hear that the protagonist is actually a vampire. It's not that he's a bad guy, but that he doesn't know how to talk to people around him. He's arrogant and self-centered, he says. He wants to know what's wrong with the protagonist, and he asks the protagonist to tell him the story of the guy who ran away, hid, and then came back. The protagonist says that all of the vampires in the region have heard this story, and they all want to know who that guy is. He tells the protagonist that he can't go to Europe with him, because he'll have to go to China first. He also says that if the protagonist wants to travel with him to Europe, he should be docile and not threaten people. He says that the vampires are very difficult to control, and that they're loyal to their leader, but they've got a tendency to become unreadable. He asks why the protagonist didn't kill the leader, and the protagonist replies that he was thinking about it. He adds that there are many vampire suffering under the leader's rule, and if the vampires follow his rules, everyone is willing to turn against the leader. He explains that he decided to spare the life of the leader and persuade the vampire community to do the same. He then asks, "Why did you not kill him?" The protagonist answers that he wasn't happy with the way the vampires were using their power to control the people around them. He wanted to be a different kind of person.
