About This Chapter
"The sweetest man" is the title of this chapter's opening soliloquy, and it's a reference to the protagonist's request that the vampire take care of him. The protagonist is ashamed that he's asking for the vampire's help, but he assures the protagonist that he will be able to fend for himself if he needs it. He tells the protagonist to be more patient and not to worry too much about the vampire. He also tells him that the protagonist should go see his son, because the chairman has a son, and the chairman hasn't shown up in a while. He asks the protagonist if he and the protagonist are really 50 different types of vampires. There are "pure" blooded vampires, people who become vampires after being bitten, and there are "mixed blooded ones" who are born between humans and vampires. Among those are the two pure-blooded vampires left: the vampire head and the vampire young master. There used to be a time when there weren't many vampires left, due to witch hunts and vampire attacks. The mistress of the vampire house and her young master's mother had a sister, but when the sister died, the two relied on one another to kill each other. Because of this, the mistress's house couldn't raise a tombstone for her, since the humans of the house were swept up in the witch's political feud. This is the first time in history that a vampire has killed a human.
