In this chapter, we learn that the learning system has successfully completed its mission: find out which of the dao's paths are the most appropriate for evolution. We learn that all the daos in the mural were chosen by the people who lived in them, and that none of them were suitable for the individual. This is not a good sign, says Ling-lan, because he wants to be able to choose his own path. He also wants to know why the system won't allow him to see all of the different daos, and he wonders if it's because the individual has to sacrifice for the sake of evolution. In other words, he doesn't want to be like the other people who chose a path that was too extreme for their needs. He wants to choose the path that is his own. He's going to name his own dao, he says, because that's what the system is all about. He asks if he's alright, and the boss says that he was just worried that the system was sucking him in. He says that his spiritual body has "stabilized," and that he can't use the aura of his new dao too easily. He tells the boss that he'll have to master the learning space before he can enter the world again.
