About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the afterlife, which is a place where the dead go to be judged by the gods. The afterlife is described in the Book of the Dead, and the narrator tells us that souls first cross a river of death and then they enter the realm of the gods, where they are judged. Anubis, one of the god's assistants, tells the narrator that they must not enter the afterlife without permission from the god. He tells him that the god of the underworld is known as the "evil god" and that there are "numerous nems lurking about" . The narrator wonders if he will be able to catch the eye of the evil god if he does so. He puts the leash on the shiro so that he will not be caught by the demon. He also tells the story of the Egyptian cats, who are considered sacred and work in the afterlife. They hold festivals and play games. The gods of Egypt are known as "the giant building judge" , and they divide the land according to the wishes of the dead. The hall of the ma'at is the place where souls are brought before the gods . They are judged according to their "foul heart." The narrator says that this is the "good part" of being a god, because it shows that the dead have been fed their foul heart. He says that the gods judgment has already been feed to man, and he wonders if it is over already. He asks the other assistants not to worry about work, since they usually cover for him when he is away on business.
