About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the narrator and his companions are on their way back from a trip to the "Torturer Hell" , which is a place where animals are tortured. The narrator is confused by the name "torturer hell" and wonders if he might be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He wonders why the narrator brought a "karashi chan" with him, and he wonders if the man might have dropped the thing in the ocean. He also wonders if it might have been dropped by the turtle that serves as the sea god's pet. The turtle is described as being slow and steady, and the narrator thinks that it might be from the "Aesop turtle" . But the turtle is not a turtle, he says, because it is a "tor toise," a term used to refer to a turtle that is slow and stable. He then wonders if this turtle is the one who takes people to "the dragon palace underwater," which is the name given to the place in the legend of the island of Urashime. The sea god, who is called "Watatsumi" by the narrator, says that his daughter is in the palace, and that he would like to speak with the narrator. He explains that the place is in legend between Japan and China, and it is believed that the first visitor to the island was a man named "yamasachi-hiko," who fell in love with his daughter at first sight. Three years later, however, the man saw the narrator in the turtle form, and was terrified by the sight.
