This chapter opens with a description of a brothel in the red light district of Yokohama, Japan. It is a place where the cat lives and works as a prostitute. The cat tells the narrator that he is about to fly into the sky and that those who spot him will be very lucky. The narrator asks the cat if he is cynical, and the cat replies that he was a "prostiti tute's pet" and that he used to be used as a "portable heater" for prostitutes. He also says that he has heard that there are a lot of people who like cats, and that it is not uncommon for prostitutes to go "bare foot" during the winter. He asks the narrator to tell him a story about old "hag" so that he will not be fired if he brings him something on the old hag the next time he goes to the brothel. He then asks the police if they have any actors coming by lately. The police have arrested a woman who runs a brothel there. The woman is an escort, and she has a lover who committed suicide. She runs the brothel and runs a chat room over it. She tells the cat that the shop is a little "outrageous" with its price gouging, but that every store in the district goes for the same price. She says that she would like to investigate the shop, but the police will not let her do so because she is a "nekomata" . She then tells him that she has come to give him a piece of her mind about her lover's death and that they are bound for sure to die together.
