In this chapter, the Underground Man tries to convince Nelly that she is his true love. He tells her that he is the one who rejected her, and that he will protect her from any harm. Nelly, however, does not believe him, and she tells him that she will protect him as well. The Underground Man tells Nelly that he has a plan to get her to come with him on his next mission.
