In this chapter, we learn that the Governess's son, Chester, has been sent away to live with a friend. The Governess tells him that he is a failure, and that he should be ashamed of himself. She tells him to look at the people around him and see how trash they are. She also tells him how difficult it is to be a perfect person, because even if he fails at something, he can just grit his teeth and persevere. He tells her that he wants to keep his daughter by his side, but he can't because she is like a bird. She says that her husband may have died young, but she at least has a good kid. She compares her son to a fairy-tale, and says that she hopes that she will be able to keep him by her side, even if she has to leave him behind. She adds that she wants him to have a good education, because he is only 11 years old and already knows to cook dinner for her. He is obedient and has good grades, and she says that they are best friends who don't want to go away. She asks him what he plans to do now that his mother is busy, and he says that he has a movie to shoot the next day.
