The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when the protagonist is still a child, and the protagonist's mother is still alive and well. The protagonist is afraid that his mother will die if he does not return to the human race. He tells his mother that he is afraid of what will happen to his mother if he returns to the demon race.
