When the scene opens, the narrator is already an adult. He's drunk a little, but he's still not happy about the scene he just witnessed. He tells us that he'd like to give his sister some "weapons" that will help her grow when she's an adult, but that's not going to happen. Instead, he says, he'll give her something that will make her happy in the future. The narrator then goes outside to search for his sister, who hasn't returned yet.
