In this chapter, the Underground Man explains his "ciga rette" tricks. First, he explains that it's illegal for a minor to possess tobacco. Next, he shows how to hide a cigarette in a person's mouth so that it won't fit through the child's tongue. He also shows how a person can use a combination of these tricks to make the inside of their mouth heal faster. The Underground Man says that he's not finished with this trick yet, and that the famous Tom Malvolio put a whole lot of cigarettes in his mouth. This is not a good image for a girl, he says, and it makes her vomit.
