This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the previous chapter, in which we learn that the Governess has accepted her sister's invitation to join the Secret Club. The Governess is annoyed that she has to accompany her sister to the club's meeting, since she has come down with a severe case of the common cold. She tells her sister that she does not want to go to the meeting because she is playing with her stuffed animals in her room. She also tells her that her sister is always playing with sticks and balls in the room, and that this is a sign that she is a member of a magic club. She asks her sister if she will show her one of her cards, and she says that since she is here anyway, why not. She then tells her to choose one of the cards and then she will find the card she chose. She finds that there is only one card in the deck, and when she looks at it, she sees two or three other cards. She realizes that the cards are being played with her by her sister, and wonders if she has an idea. She sighs and says that she wants to be quiet at the faculty office, since her sister has been yelling at her for being so loud. She wonders when she will be able to act like a teacher again.
