The chapter opens with a flashback to a conversation between the Governess and her brother. The Governess tells her brother that she has lost a contact, and that he should just wear glasses to protect his face. She tells him to wrap a vacuum cleaner head in a stocking and vacuum the floor. She then tells him that he can use a laundry bag or a mesh bag to open the air vents. She also tells him he can take a picture of the room and use it to search for the lost contact. The flashback ends with a description of the scene in which the two men are searching for the missing contact.
