The chapter opens with a flashback to the present day, when Hiroshi and his family are preparing to move into their new home. The narrator laments the fact that they will be living together for the first time in their lives. He laments that everyone in the town will be excited about the move, and that the three of them will have to share the same bed as before. Hiroshi's father, however, is opposed to the move. He worries that his son's marriage will not be good enough for his son.
