About This Chapter
The scene opens on a street in Memphis, a city in the south of Egypt. The narrator is dressed in a three-thirteenth-century style of clothing, and he complains about the oppressiveness of the city's dress code. He laments the fact that he is surrounded by people who dress as if they are on a date. He is worried that the woman he is about to propose to is not as beautiful as he thinks she is. He wonders if she is as good-looking as he is, and wonders if the people think he does not exist. He tells the audience that he has decided to date the man, and that he refuses to share the man with others. He asks the audience if they have ever dated someone like him, and they reply that they have. He then tells them that his real name is " ivy" , which is the first time he has ever said his name. He explains that he used the name when he was in an emergency, and the name is also his favorite flower. Princess Amen tells him that Roxane has arrived at the city, asking for an urgent meeting with the king. She has come to expose Roxane as a traitor, and to expose her as the king's highness. The royal brother comes to offer congratulations to Roxane's sister, and she tells the royal brother that she has received a message from god saying that the blonde-haired girl does not belong to the royal family, and will bring misfortune to Egypt. She says that she will not lie to the king if he wants to marry her, but that she would never lie if it would cost her her the ability to speak to god.
