About This Chapter
In this short scene, the teacher is challenged to a duel by his younger sister, Miss Mei. The younger sister mocks the teacher's presumptuousness in front of him, saying that he is a braggart and that he can't beat his brother-in-law. The teacher responds by saying that his knowledge is equal to that of one tenth of Master Xu's, and that it is unfair that he should be called a master when he has done nothing but learn for the past hundred years. Miss Mee replies that she has a simple request for the teacher: if he fails to give her the second line, she will pretend to be a cow and go out into the fields and experience the hard labor of the peasants. If he does not answer for three years, then he should stop humiliating her. The older sister responds that she is sure the teacher can answer the challenge, but she is afraid that the teacher will be scared of her. She asks the teacher if he has ever thought of fairness when he mocks a hard working woman, and the teacher replies that he has. The elder sister then asks the younger sister if she has ever had a competition against the teacher, and she replies that the competition is an archery contest, and one of the competitors will be the winner
