"Man chap 14" opens with a soliloquy about life, love, and being independent. He compares himself to a butterfly that will disappear when he gets tired. He says that he likes the life of being independent because he can conquer the world with his sword, ignore life and man, and play around in the hypocritical world. He tells us that his father is the governor of the town of Jiangsu, and that his brother, Lin, is the "most outstanding person" in the town. Lin says that the performance of his brother tonight shows that he is the most profound musician in the whole town, and he says that if he hadnt said that, he would never have known that he was that great. Lin then tells us about his father's son, Guo, and how he is so happy that he didn't realize that Lin was the son of Mr. Luo, the governor. Lin also says that flirting with a girl is very simple, but that he must be bold, be subtle, and be "thick skinned" . Lin asks Guo to tell Miss Quin on behalf of his young master that he will be coming soon.
