In this chapter, we learn that the eldest daughter of the Shanghai family is the one who was in the carriage with Caixin. Caixin's cleverness has led to the establishment of a number of businesses in Shanghai, including a perfume shop, a soap factory, and an annual commercial. The eldest daughter, however, is not a part of these businesses. She is the only member of the family who has not grown up. She has suffered greatly because Caixin has not been able to provide her with a good upbringing. She tells Caixin that Caixin should take care of her, and Caixin agrees to do so. The elder Caixin then tells the younger Caixin to knock on the door of the house where Caixin used to live, and to ask Caixin for help in getting his sister to rest. The older Caixin tries to comfort Caixin by telling him that he should go to sleep, but Caixin is too tired to sleep. He tells him to drink a cup of milk before he goes to bed, which will help him sleep better.
