The chapter opens with a poem by a spider named "literary phoenix" . The narrator introduces the poem by saying that he is grateful to have the chance to recite it. He says that he copied the poem for his cousin, who is a talented student at the poetry club. He then asks his brother-in-law, Lin, why he didn't go to the club before his sister took over the family business. Lin replies that he hasn't seen him come to the poetry clubs before, and that he will never forgive him. Lin says that there are all the rich young masters and young ladies in the club who are unfaithful. Lin tells the narrator that his cousin is a famous student of the club and that even though she doesn't tell him about it, she feels that she is not happy about it. Lin asks the narrator not to be ashamed of him, because he is neat and kind. Lin then tells the story of David Copperfield, a famous magician who brings happiness and dreams to everyone.
