About This Chapter
The next morning, the men discuss the situation. They've just received word from the manta ray that a research ship has changed its course and is in the middle of the Mariana Trench, which is about 5,000 feet below the surface of the ocean. They don't know if they'll be able to find the ship, but they're determined to do everything they can to find it. They hear that the ship's pilot has died, and the men are sure that he's gone into the abyss. They also hear that Madame Pernelle has disappeared into the depths of the abyss, and they think that she's probably not able to communicate with the men. They think that her disappearance is related to the fact that the men didn't locate the submersible that they were using to search for the ship. The men are confident that they've succeeded in their mission, and that they won't have to go back to the depths to find a ship.
