About This Chapter
The ship is on fire, and the father has run out of the building. The ship's captain, Frederick, and his wife, Susan, are on their way back to the U.S., where they've been working on the Volstok I program. Frederick tells his wife that he's glad to see her again, and that it has been a long time since he saw her. He also tells her that he owes her some favors, and he hopes that she'll tell him about the secret of the extinct megalodon. He's going to keep it a secret from his grave, he says, and then he'll share it with his family. Frederick asks if they're going to go to the "screening room" , and Susan says that's fine, but that they'll have to stay in the ship. Frederick says that he won't need him anymore, because he'd rather have no one to talk to. He tells Susan that the whales look terrified, but he doesn't think anything is behind them. They're swimming faster than normal, but there's no sign of anything behind them, he tells her. The professor says that it's hard to prove his theory, since the whales have been living in deep caverns for thousands of years. He says that certain predators have survived in the past, but the whales seem to have something in their water that scares them. Frederick is convinced that something is in the water, and says that they need to be careful. He can't even see what he thinks is a shark
