In this chapter, we are introduced to Petruchio and his crew, who are working on a new oil and gas discovery in the southern part of the island of Fortuna. They have just completed the first phase of the project, and they are concerned about the safety of the new well, which is located in a "hellhole" in the middle-of-nowhere, 150 miles away from the nearest "asshole" . They are also concerned about how deep the lake is, and about the "true fresh water monsters" , which they believe to be pikes. They also discuss the danger of the lake's whirlpools, which have caused many people to drown.
