About This Chapter
Kimmelville, the captain of the expedition, tells the group that they are from the "adome group" of islands in the Pacific Ocean. He tells them that sedna is "the one-eyed queen of hell" and that on rare occasions, she and her dog let "cursed souls" escape from their villages and return to "slaughter amongst the living" . He also tells them about the recent discovery of a prehistoric megalodon, which he says is the "most formidable predator" that has ever been found on the planet. He says that he came close to getting "narcosis" , which is a disease caused by too much nitrogen in the air, when he was testing his new underwater system. He wonders if the photograph is authentic, as he believes it was taken in 1993. He tells the crew that he believes they have found the remains of a "centenarian" of the "carpathians" who may have been responsible for the disappearance of the tooth and human remains. He explains that the entire area is under constant surveillance and that it would be too dangerous for them to go into the trenches where the prehistoric cave was discovered
