This chapter opens with a soliloquy by the "first angel" , who tells the audience that he and his companions performed their duties as the "magnificent army of light" under the leadership of Caius Martius. He tells them that his origins are different from theirs, and that he is resentful of their presence in the world. He says that they will soon open their eyes to the "holy mission" and that they too will be able to see the "resentful soul" of the body they have entered. He asks the audience if they have heard a "scream just now" and says that it is not over yet. He then asks if the fun of the pilgrimage is over already, and wonders if it is for everyone a "mass fore- damned" . He adds that he has not been able to find "genuine rest" because of the "harred ha- burns within him."
