In this short scene, we learn that the town's pagans are planning to attack the town, and that the townspeople are trying to stop them from doing so. One of the town leaders tells the audience that he doesn't believe in hanging people, but he does believe in the Bible, which says that people should be free to worship whatever they want. He tells the townspeople that he's sorry that they don't listen to him, but that the federal law is the first thing he needs to worry about. He says that the woman who's been arrested is a witch, and if the town does not arrest her, she'll destroy the town. The town leader then tells us that the marshal has heard about the town and wants to know what happened at the train station and at St. Petersburg. He's going to make sure that no one is executed for what they've done.
