De Guiche tells his father that he watched over his son as he served the Lord better than anyone else on earth. He says that God is not love, but suspicion and mistrust. He asks his father why God would test his faith, and he says that those who loved God the most with pain died 30 years ago. He adds that in time, God will test mankind as he did the angels. He curses his father and tells him that he will offer his body to him. He will lead mankind beyond salvation and into a world of darkness and suffering.
