In this chapter, the young narrator, Jack Porter, meets up with his friend and fellow scholar, Antonio Martin, who is studying ancient languages at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Rome. Jack and Antonio discuss the cryptic inscription on the temple, which they believe to be written by the ancient Belakians. Jack is impressed by Antonio's knowledge of ancient languages, and is eager to learn more about the temple's contents.
