A few of the priests go down to the village to speak with the villagers, but they are met with hostility from the locals. The priests are afraid that the villagers will curse their village because of their presence, and so they leave. When they return, they find that no one has recorded their apparitions in the church records, and that they have been denounced by the parishioners. They are amazed at the power of the devil to awaken the soul from its slumber.
