The next morning, the Governess and Mr. Lorry are startled to hear strange noises coming from their room. The Governess is upset that she is spending the night with him, but he assures her that he will take care of her. He says that he has known girls since his past life, and that they would not act in such an insensitive way. He asks her why she has such a strong feeling for him, and she says that she has been wondering why he has such an attachment to her. She tells him that he is old enough to understand now, and he says that now she does not even see him as a human man. He tells her that it must be his destiny to constantly care for her, as if she were still not getting it. He promises to make sure to protect her this time, and they leave.
