As the chapter opens, we learn that Madame Jeung's daughter, "lady eunjo," is afraid of having slaves around. She's afraid that her mother, the original Madame Jeong, will kill her and take her away from her. The narrator tells us that this is not the first time that this has happened, and that it's probably not the last time it'll happen. The slaves begin to treat her badly, and she's even more afraid of them because of her mother. She tells the narrator that what kept her alive was her fear that she'll be eaten alive.
