In this chapter, Harriet tries to convince herself that she's not the only one who's been sold into slavery. She's the one who was born into the system, and she should be allowed to live her life as a free person. She also tells us that the family that sold her was so desperate that they even sold her own daughter, who is now suffering from a terrible illness. Harriet's a little worried about how she'll pay for the mushroom that's supposedly supposed to cure her daughter's illness, but she decides to pay for it anyway.
