About This Chapter
The next morning, the Underground Man and Enos discuss the latest developments in the field of music. The Underground Man says that he's heard a rumor that a girl from school has invented a device that will allow people to listen to music through a long-range acoustic device. Enos says that the girl is probably referring to a device called a "long range acoustic device," or "LRAD," which is a short-range device that disables people with sound. The LRAD, he says, is like a "scum at first glance" device, because it disables the person who's listening to it. He says that she's probably talking about a new kind of device that's been invented, called an "audio weapon," or an "improvised lRAD." He says the LRAD is like an outdated pitch, which is why it's so useful. He also says that people don't measure happiness based on what other people say; happiness is measured by how long it takes someone to say something. He adds that he doesn't like listening to music, though, because he'd rather talk than listen. He's going to hit the sack on the girl and her friends. He brings Enos some beer, snacks, and a bottle of water when they leave, and he says he'll be back soon. He complains that he forgot to mention
