The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Hiroshi, who says that he has never thought he would watch the police take someone away twice in his life. He thanks them all for their kindness. He says he would rather not have to fight with Nagasaki every day. He tells them that he just got a message from one of their boys. Hiroshi tells him that it seems that winter is upon them again. He is relieved that they were thwarted before their plan was put into action. However, he says, while they were in custody, it appears that their mission was lynched through "unrelated legislation" .
