Back at school, Bard tries to talk to his brother, Percy, who is worried about his brother's injury. He tries to get Percy to return to the patrol group, but Percy is too scared to do so. He tells Bard that Percy is a good student, and that he knows that his brother is a much better fighter than he is. Bard tells Percy that he's just trying to get a fight out of him. Percy tells him to go back to the squad, and chase after the rebel. He doesn't want to hurt him, he says, because the patrol is supposed to bring back runaways without chasing after them. He says that he was right, and the patrol should have just let Percy run away. When he hears this, he runs after him. He finds his father, who has been missing for a year and three months.
