The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the school year. The narrator tells us that he's fine, and that he plans to go back to school for a while. He's not worried about the transfer of Mr. Snowcap to another class, though, because he doesn't think it's a good idea. He also tells us about a fight he had with a group of other students, and how he didn't know why he was fighting. He says he was just protecting himself, not leading the fight. The other students were scared, but he says he wasn't because he was scared of them, but because he hadn't had anything to eat for a very long time. He adds that if things like this happen again, he'll report it to the school's disciplinary department. The chapter ends with a description of the grooming mirror in the school library. It's supposed to be used to confirm that a student is a "mage" at the school, and the narrator explains that it will allow him into the library.
