Suddenly, Shmoop hears soft footsteps outside his door. He looks down and sees a pair of boots, but he can't see the man's face because the glass window is blocked. He pretends that he's fallen asleep, and the footsteps get closer and closer, until he sees that the man is wearing only a leather pair of shoes, but not his face. He assumes it's someone else, and then the footsteps go away, and he realizes that he was faking his sleep. He thinks that someone dropped their clothes, but the moonlight gives him a better view of what's going on. He imagines that someone has dropped their shoes there, but then realizes that they're actually wearing leather shoes. He's so excited that he wants to go check on the man, but Shmo points out that the ghost isn't dead yet, and that he can just send him down to the bookstore, where he won't have to worry about the Knapsack. Shmo says that he should be worried about the ghost, because there's a killing ghost in the area, and Shmo has to go
