In this chapter, the protagonist explains how he came to be in the village of Sanxiang. He had gone off to work one day, and when he got home, he found that all the streets around him had disappeared. He was freaking out because an old man was approaching him with his granddaughter, and he asked how he could get out of the village, but the old man had already left with the granddaughter. The protagonist had no choice, but to enter the village and find out what was going on inside. He found out that wives and children were saying that they were starving, and that their parents were also starving. He spent the night in his car, covered in dirt and grass blades.
