In this chapter, the narrator reflects on the five years that have passed since he proposed to his former self. He feels that it is strange that he has not been able to drink until morning. He asks his old friend, who is now a mechanical engineer, if he is finished for the day, and he tells him that he will talk to him later. He then goes on to tell him that his work day ended with a high note, and that he invited him out for a week's visit. He tells his friend that his dream was to become a bread winner, but that he does not think he will be able to achieve that. He also tells him to remember what he did, and to remember that he was a popu-lar, and people resented him for it. He says that he lost his job in exchange for his life, but he says that they have been family since they were five years old. The narrator then asks his friend if he has a girl friend, to which he replies that he doesnt have one. He adds that he is sorry that he cant remember someone, because he has forged a good relationship with people, compared to what he had as a youth
