The narrator thanks the innkeeper for his hospitality. He tells the innkeeper that his wife ran off a few days ago, and he and his wife are planning to return. The innkeeper tells the couple that they are not running away, but that they have eaten at the inn's help. The narrator asks if his wife is his first love, and the innkeeper tells him that she is. He asks if they are two of a couple, and they reply that they were, and that their first love does not last. He says that he will go buy some alcohol, go to a shrine, and go out one more time. When the innkeeper asks him if he wants to sleep on the futon, the narrator replies that he does, and then he tells the story of how he first met the innkeeper, and how he was shocked at how much he loved him. He apologizes for his rudeness, and says that if he keeps this up, he will destroy his wife. He also tells the narrator that he had his first time, and apologizes that it took him so long to realize that he was in love with his wife
