About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a conversation between the narrator and his friend, who introduces himself as "Neji" . The narrator explains that his name is Shuu and that he is a student at a school in Yokohama, Japan. Shuu's parents came to see him one night, and Shuu remembers that Shuu was "a childlike romantic" , despite the fact that he was "an adult." Shuu tells the narrator that he fell in love with Shuu when he was a child, and that his love for Shuu has made every day seem "like a roller coaster." The narrator wonders if Shuu likes anyone, but Shuu says that he does not. He tells Shuu that he has received an important letter from the government about the notice of divorce, and he wonders if his parents know about it. He wonders if he should accept it himself, since his parents do not seem to know about the divorce. He says that his mother's affair with the man who was her father's partner was the one that caused him to make the wrong choice, and after that, the relationship between the two of them "just kept getting worse." He wonders why he is even at the school now, and wonders if it is because of Shuu. He asks Shuu to consider each item of thanks properly before answering the question, "What do you think?" Shuu replies that the government notice affects the important, and she advises her friend not to answer the question "What are you talking about?" until she has had time to think about the subject. She says that she is glad to have these feelings, for they are "important," and she wishes she could be her mother.
