The next day at work, Yoji asks to speak to a colleague. The colleague tells him that he has received a letter from a woman named Sanada, asking him to break off his relationship with Yoji. Yoji tells her that he does not want to break the engagement off until she tells him what she thinks of the relationship between him and Sanada. He tells her to cool her head and says that he will not give up until he hears her say that she does not believe him. He says that it would be better to build a "track record" of their relationship by gradually cutting off their contact, but he is not willing to do that. When Yoji mentions that he was once in love with a girl named Sanjou, she says that she and Yoji dated from the fifth grade to the high school years, and that Yoji was kind and fun to be around. She adds that he told her he did not want her to end up like him, but Yoji says that this is not true and that she should follow her heart. She tells him to follow his heart and follow his mind, and he agrees to do so.
