About This Chapter
The chapter opens with Tomoyuki's confession that he doesn't have any clothes for his upcoming date with Takasaki. He's going to go out with his friend, and he wants to make sure he's wearing the right stuff. He asks Nisaka to help him pick out some stuff for him, but she's not feeling well. He tells her that he'll have to go back to school to do another play at the woods, so he won't be able to help her pick out any more stuff until then. They go for a walk together, and the narrator tells us that it's really cold outside. He wonders if the street has a side walk, and wonders if there's any way he can walk on it like that. The narrator then tells us about the stamp rally that's taking place in the area, and how his brother has gotten a flyer for it, but he didn't know about it at all. He says that the stamp is upside down, which makes him think about ancient times. He also says that his friend is having a lot of fun with the stamp, and that she is having fun imagining people's lives in pre-literate societies. He wants to know what it is that makes her think that way, and then he asks about the display over at the museum, which he thinks is cuter than he expected. He orders some coffee and a cream soda, and asks if he can make his own hanwa, which is a kind of mask. He then asks about his friend's face, and she says that she'd like to know why he looks like that, and if he wants her to smile, he'd be happy to believe in her. She then asks him if he has a date for sending the uniform picture to Nisaka, and when he says no, she asks if she can kiss him. She asks him why he wants his friend to lose her good-for-nothing kiss. He admits that he sometimes stutters, and sometimes he acts like a boy friend. But he still wants to be a good friend to her, and to be happy with her.
