About This Chapter
"In a world where I got what I so desperately wanted" , the narrator tells us, "lying mixed with truth . . sometimes . i feel so intense regret . whether it is pointless jealousy . or . a fatal mistake I'm making" . He's referring to the fact that he's in love with a girl he met in sixth grade, but he doesn't know how to express it in a way that's understandable to the rest of the book's audience. He tells us that he was out walking when he caught a cold, and he'll be getting some rest before class. He asks if it's a cold or a fever, and the narrator says that it is. He says that his nose hurts from blowing a lot of it, and that he can't go back to class because he caught the cold. He goes on to say that he and his mom have been living in the same house for five years, so they've been sharing a room for the past five years. The narrator tells him that his room is decorated with stickers, and his desk is covered in them. He thinks that his mom would never say he was weird, even if she knew him, because she's so sensitive to that. He also tells her that Nisaka is coming back to school, but that they're no longer friends. Nisaka may never see the narrator again, he says, because he may never speak to him again. He adds that he saw a new side of the narrator the other day, when he was talking about something that he couldn't stop thinking about. He wants to tell the narrator that he made a deal with the government to make sure that the government didn't have to pay for the war, but the narrator won't tell him what it was.
